Not updating your blog is the new Friday

When in Rome...

26/02/06 09:46 PM

Merely two days after going live with this site I’ve gone a week without updating it in any way. A good start then. My excuse is a good one though: I’ve been in Rome.

A combination of half term and birthday resulted in another City Break™, this time in Italy’s capital. We had a baggage weight issue at the airport* and the weather was pretty crap but we had a great time.

The people are all really nice and friendly; although we must just look English as no-one even attempted to get us to speak Italian. Obviously the sights are all amazing; the colloseum is really impressive and as a result I’m actually going to watch Gladiator, a film I’d never really been bothered about before. Gasp. The Vatican was packed and we climbed all of the 550-odd steps right to the top of the dome to get both a fantastic view of the city and knackered legs at the same time.

The food is typically lovely and most of the restaurants etc were nice; we did learn something interesting in one place when we received our bill with two service charges (one service and one cover charge): When we asked what the cover charge was for, the waiter lifted a corner of the table cloth and said “Cover charge”. So it’s literally for the cover, ha ha.

Back to work then next week, groan. Roll on Easter, that’s what I say…

*A certain Irish budget airline that will remain nameless, although I will say it rhymes with Bryan Bear, have recently slyly introduced a new policy regarding baggage weight. You’re allowed 15kg each and you used to be able to pool it into one suitcase, as long as it’s obviously under 30kg. We’ve now found out you aren’t allowed to pool any more and they will charge you loads if you go over. We weighed in at 20kg, combined, but were told nope, they would much rather we had twice the number of suitcases and an extra 10kg going on their ‘plane instead. The bizarre thing is that we were allowed to take 5kg out and take it all on as hand luggage. Luckily we had a big bag.

Just thought I’d mention it to prevent anyone else having to unpack their case in the airport and squeeze underpants into their pockets…
