Best and Worst Places to Live 2006

27/10/06 11:40 AM

The Best and Worst Places to Live 2006 was on telly last night, based on statistics such as unemployment levels, exam results, house prices etc etc. In case anyone out there has a life (is Thursday still the new Friday? I can’t keep up) and you didn’t see it, the results are as follows:

Best:

  1. Winchester
  2. Horsham
  3. Tunbridge Wells
  4. Harrogate
  5. South Cambridgeshire
  6. Orkney
  7. East Hertfordshire
  8. Epsom and Ewell
  9. Eastleigh
  10. West Dorset

Worst:

  1. Hackney
  2. Tower Hamlets
  3. Merthyr Tydfil
  4. Newham
  5. Islington
  6. Middlesbrough
  7. Nottingham
  8. Strabane
  9. Blaenau Gwent
  10. Manchester

So Winchester is the best place to live in the whole of Britain? Result! I lived in Winchester for a few years as a kid and therefore have some kind of claim over it. Score!

As for the worst, naturally I’m delighted to see Nottingham in the Top 10. So: my family are all from Manchester, I now live in Nottingham, and I work near Islington. Balls. Obviously London is a shit-hole but if my Mum sees those stats she’ll be on the blower asking what the attraction of Nottingham was…

What I wanna know though, is where’s Doncaster?! Surely an absence from both lists is worse. Donny is so lame that it can’t even make the worst list! Jeez. So come on Donny pull your finger out and get on the 2007 list! Either one will do.

Interesting to see that neither Luton or Hull feature on the worst list. I thought Nottingham was quite nice when I was there. Definitely nicer than Luton or Hull.

It’s nice, aye. But evidently the muggers, murderers, drug dealers and, well, general crims obviously think so too. Although gun and knife crime are both down, drug dealing has gone up.

Still, if it was good enough for Robin Hood…

It’s a bit surprising Islington is on there – I live in there and it’s quite nice compared to some of the other places I’ve lived. Some parts of it are rough as, but it’s not that bad. Where abouts near Islington do you work, Stu?

Rik – Okay where I work isn’t exactly the closest place to Islington, but it’s just not the done thing to admit to working in Kings Cross. Upper Street is my lunch time venue of choice, anyway. HMV…

No one ever wants to admit to working in Kings Cross. Always sounds like working as a cheap rent boy!

I live just in between Kings Cross and Angel, just off from Pentonville Road, so I know the Upper Street area pretty well.

How dare you – you pay for what you get in this world and my rates are reasonable but not cheap… But yeah, exactly. Kings Cross is rubbish. So, Pentonville Rd… You’re not, you know, in prison are you?...
